We walked uphill on asphalt most of the way, stopping at Monte de Gozo, also called Mount of Joy because it's the spot where early pilgrims could first see the Cathedral. Today one can see the sprawling city but the Cathedral is not visible. There is a small Chapel on the hill and also a monument in memory of Pope John Paul II and his visit to Santiago.
From there we walked down into the city of Santiago-and through the new city for about five more kilometers.
Finally...the Cathedral!
And lots of pilgrims! A military ceremony was just concluding in the largest plaza. We were not sure what to do first or where to go, but our young friend Andrew appeared and helped us out. He directed us to the pilgrim office.
By the end of the day we had attended two masses, one celebrated by the bishop with a full men's choir and organ and trumpet and botafumero swing and a huge military presence. The second mass started with the priest welcoming us to the house of St. James. The giant incense burner was swung again!
The day was spent with happy reunions with friends we had seen off and on along the way and tearful goodbyes.
We received our compostelas! The official church document to prove we completed our pilgrimage.
It was quite a day and it will take us a while to process everything. For today we plan to tour the church and look for more of our friends as we wander around the city. I will get back to the blog, and add photos, when I can!
Siempre,
The Three Peregrinas
